An advocacy mailer was sent to all Bloomfield Township residents falsely stating that sharp shooting would be allowed in Township neighborhoods in compliance with a statewide policy by the Department of Natural Resources to manage wildlife. The Township has taken no action on deer management currently. In exploring options, the board has and will continue to prioritize the safety of residents. No open hunting with firearms will ever be allowed as it is specifically prohibited by a Township ordinance.
Bloomfield Township formed a Deer Management Advisory Committee in October 2025 to review and examine deer populations in the community. On September 14, 2026, the committee presented their report and proposal to the Township Board of Trustees. The committee’s recommendation for consideration was that the Township partner with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Management program. Under this proposal, a full-time USDA wildlife biologist would work with the Township to develop a humane deer management plan that prioritizes residents' safety.
The board did not vote on the recommendation at this meeting instead choosing to revisit the item at the following meeting. However, the Board of Trustees does not have an agenda item considering a deer management resolution at the September 28, 2026 meeting due to a known absence by a board member. The item will be discussed at a future meeting when the full board will be present. Agendas can be found on the Township website under Public Meetings.
To clarify for residents:
- The Board of Trustees will be considering a partnership with the USDA, not the DNR;
- The proposed plan with the USDA would work in conjunction with the DNR’s approved methods of deer management; and
- The Township will prioritize resident safety with any action taken regarding the deer study.
If the USDA recommends a cull and the Board agrees, it will most certainly be conducted with resident safety as its top priority. No widespread hunting by unknown hunters. Only retained professionals following the strictest rules and with continuous oversight on private property with permission and wide safety protocols.
