Every winter it’s important to be vigilant and ready for any sudden changes in temperature. This weekend, in particular, our area is bracing for single-digit and sub-zero temperatures due to a brutal arctic blast. A few tips to prepare for falling temperatures:

  • Always be ready to shelter-in-place for three days.
  • Keep sand, rock salt, or non-clumping kitty litter available to make walkways and steps less slippery.
  • Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, maintain a full tank of gas and keep an emergency supply kit in your car.
  • Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.
  • Maintain heating equipment. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear.
  • Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Please keep pets indoors during these frigid temperatures to ensure they stay warm, safe, and comfortable, reducing stress and potential illness.
