The busy Labor Day holiday is fast-approaching as Michiganders make plans for fun outdoor activities and late-summer road trips. Sadly, the holiday weekend is also one of the deadliest times of the year in terms of impaired-driving fatalities.

Over the Labor Day holiday weekends from 2019 to 2023, there were a total of 44 driver fatalities in traffic crashes in Michigan. In those crashes, 43.2 percent of the drivers killed were alcohol- and/or drug-impaired.

The Bloomfield Township Police Department (BTPD) wants to make sure that you know from August 15 through September 1, there will be increased enforcement and messaging about the dangers of driving impaired as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” (DSOGPO) campaign.

BTPD Sgt. Nick Soley shares, “So far this year, we have arrested 80 drunk drivers. Crashes, especially serious crashes, continue to rise in Bloomfield Township with alcohol and drugs being a direct correlation in many of those crashes. We remind everyone to designate a sober driver.”
