The Township Fire Department wants to remind you about the importance of learning Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and having basic first aid training. When a medical emergency happens, every second counts. Most cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals (in homes, public places, etc.), where immediate professional help is not available.
Bystander CPR can keep blood and oxygen flowing to the brain and other vital organs until emergency services arrive. Widespread CPR knowledge strengthens public health and safety. Communities with more trained individuals have higher survival rates in emergencies.
Additionally, CPR isn't just for heart attacks—it can help in near-drowning, drug overdose, electrocution, or any event where someone stops breathing or their heart stops beating.

Tip: if you find yourself needing to call 911 for help in a cardiac emergency, dispatchers are trained to walk you through CPR/first aid training and provide guidance until EMS can arrive.
“In an emergency situation, anything you can do will help until the professionals arrive,” says Captain Sova.
