BCTV is now ready to offer a new workshop dedicated to sports broadcasting with their inaugural BCTV Sports Broadcasting Camp. This program will offer students a unique, hands-on experience covering live events in the realm of local high school sports.
Per Cable and Community Relations Director Carrie LeZotte, “Here at BCTV, community access TV has been evolving. It’s about responding to the community’s needs and being able to play a role in digital literacy and video production education.”
Throughout the camp, students will dive into every aspect of a live broadcast, including:
· Running a broadcast production truck
· Operating cameras and capturing the action
· Managing replay, graphics, and audio
· Understanding broadcast engineering
· On-camera reporting and storytelling
Ryan Wooley joins the BCTV team with a wealth of experience in broadcasting, as he has spent nearly two decades working in the Detroit market as a sports broadcaster. He is currently the play-by-play voice of Eastern Michigan University men's and women's basketball, as well as volleyball on ESPN+. He is also the color analyst on 93.5 WHMI for their high school football and basketball "Game of the Week.”
Wooley shares, "I'm very excited to take part in the sports broadcasting camp because I know there are future sportscasters out there that have a desire to do this for a living and just need a little guidance to get the ball rolling. I want to instill in them the confidence, drive, and work ethic that has helped me go from chasing a dream, to living my dream."
The camp's highlight is “Game Day,” where students will put their skills to the test by producing a live broadcast of a soccer match between Seaholm High School and Brother Rice High School. From behind the scenes to the final whistle blow, students will play a vital role in bringing the game to life.
The final day of camp is a “Wrap Party,” where students will watch their broadcast replay, celebrate their achievements, and enjoy a special lunch together.
The camp will run two weeks, with dates from August 11 through August 14 and August 18 through August 20. The program is open to students aged 14 to 18. The cost of the program is $200 for residents of member communities, which include Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms, and Franklin. The price is $250 for anyone outside these communities.
Space is limited. Applicants will be notified if they are accepted to the camp no later than June 26, 2025.
