Road Construction Updates
See below for Construction Updates in the Township and nearby that may affect residents.
Westbound I-696, ramps closed from I-75 to M-10 starting Nov. 14 for traffic shift in Oakland County (Updated 11/3/2025)
As the newly rebuilt eastbound I-696 lanes from M-10 to I-75 get closer to completion, crews are planning to switch westbound I-696 traffic from I-75 to M-10 over to the eastbound side in order to rebuild the westbound lanes. This traffic switch will limit the entrance/exit ramps available for westbound traffic. This work is weather dependent, and if delayed, would occur the following weekend.
Beginning 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, to 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, the following entrance ramps to westbound I-696 will be closed (reentry is at M-10 (Lodge Freeway)/Lahser Road):
- Couzens Avenue
- Bermuda/Hilton Road
- M-1 (Woodward Avenue)
- Coolidge Highway
- Greenfield Road
- Southfield Road
- Evergreen Road
From 4 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, to 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16:
- The northbound and southbound I-75 ramps (Exit 61) to westbound I-696 will be closed.
- Westbound I-696 will be closed from I-75 to Lahser Road. The suggested detour is southbound I-75, westbound M-8 (Davison Freeway) and northbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) to westbound I-696.
Beginning 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, through late 2026, westbound I-696 will have three lanes open from I-75 to Lahser Road with only the following entrance/exit ramps open:
- I-75
- M-1 (Woodward Avenue)
- Southfield Road
- US-24 (Telegraph Road)/M-10 (Lodge Freeway)/Lahser Road
The following westbound exit/entrance ramps will be closed through late 2026 (all eastbound ramps will remain closed as well):
- Couzens Avenue
- Bermuda/Hilton Road
- Coolidge Highway
- Greenfield Road
- Evergreen Road
The final phase of the Restore the Reuther project involves completing the rebuilding of I-696 in 2026, while in 2027 I-696 will have major road work done between I-75 and Dequindre Road. That work includes rebuilding the roadway, bridge improvements and drainage structures.
As part of the project, 60 bridges are being repaired, including the rebuilding of the Church Street Plaza bridge that contains Victoria Park continues and has a walkway detour in place.

Vernor Estates Water Main Replacement (Updated 11/10/2025)
As part of the Township’s continuing capital improvement program, existing 6 and 8-inch diameter cast iron water mains in the Vernor Estates Subdivision are being replaced by High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) lines equivalent to 8-inch or greater cast iron lines. The scope of work includes replacing the aging water mains, replacing and adding hydrants and valves, replacing the water service lines within the right-of-way, and installing new stop boxes. The construction method selected for the project is pre-chlorinated pipe bursting. Pre-chlorinated pipe bursting is less disruptive than traditional open cut water main replacement. These water system enhancements will replace deteriorating lines installed nearly 60 years ago, provide the residents with a more reliable water system, improve water flow, and lessen the chances of water service loss due to emergency water system repairs. Importantly, the project will be completed prior to start of the road SAD project taking place in 2026.
Water Main Replacement
Phase1: September—October 2025
Phase 2: October—December 2025 (accelerated to save resources and reduce risk)
More information about the Vernor Estates Water Main Replacement Project is available here.
Residents may also experience discolored water due to turbulence in the old pipes during the project and air in the plumbing during the switching over of residential water services. If this happens, run the cold water through a faucet until the water is clear. This may take three to five minutes. If you have concerns about lead in your water, view our information on lead services, how to identify if you have lead plumbing, how to reduce your potential exposure to lead, and testing information.
Square Lake Road Pavement (5/22/25)
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing $1 million to repair pavement on US-24 Business Road (Square Lake Road) between US-24 (Telegraph Road) and M-1 (Woodward Avenue) in Bloomfield Township. Work is expected to begin 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2025 and end in early July.
Work will take place overnight on weekdays, 7:00 p.m.-5:00 a.m. Monday-Friday, and on the weekends intermittently during the day and night between 7:00 a.m. Saturdays and 5:00 a.m. Mondays.
During construction, at least one lane will remain open at all times in each direction, although there may be delays due to flag operations while the work is ongoing. Reduced speeds will be posted and access will be maintained to all residents and businesses for the duration of the project.

Ramp Metering Begins June 18, 2025 on I-96 in Oakland County
After a long hiatus, Michigan is again implementing ramp metering, which helps regulate the flow of traffic from ramps onto busy freeways. According to Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), it will be used on the I-96 Flex Route portion in western Oakland County.
On this week’s Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, Sarah Gill, operations engineer for the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) Metro Region, talks about how it will work and the history of ramp metering in Michigan.
Gill explains the key reasons for implementing ramp metering, which include improving merging, reducing crashes and reducing travel times. An MDOT how-to video offers guidance on the concept.
Next week’s episode will delve farther into the topic and include conversations with a traffic safety engineer with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), who will talk about how successful the concept has been in the rapidly growing Denver area. You’ll also hear a national perspective from the director of safety and mobility at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).
