Transportation Services

Rides from your home to BTSS*

Service is provided to residents of the Bloomfield Hills School District, the City of Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township. Call 248.341.6450 to schedule a ride.  Two business days’ notice required.  Fee: $2 each way.  (*Availability of rides subject to BTSS use of bus for scheduled trips.)

SMART Community Transit

Small SMART bus service is available from your home in Bloomfield Township to many destinations.  Call Diane at 248.341.6450 for information or to schedule a ride.

Medical Transportation Services

Medical Transportation is available to 60+ senior residents of Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township thru SMART funding.  Application for program required.  At this time, no fees to residents.  Donations appreciated.

Volunteer Drivers

Volunteer drivers provide transportation to local medical appointments to BTSS Members. Subject to availability.

Grocery Shopping Trips

BTSS is pleased to announce that a new program to assist with grocery shopping and errands has been developed.  Volunteers are available to aid 60+, non-driving Bloomfield Township residents who need assistance, with a maximum of 2 hours every month and flexibility between client and driver. Transportation FAQ's

1. I can no longer drive; can BTSS help?

Bloomfield Township Senior Services offers a number of transportation options for seniors:

Residents of the Bloomfield Hills School District, the City of Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township may schedule a ride from their home to the BTSS Center to participate in scheduled classes, trips and programs. (Availability of rides subject to BTSS use of bus for scheduled trips.)

Transportation to medical appointments is available to 60+ senior residents of Bloomfield Township and the City of Bloomfield Hills, providing there is an application on file with proof of residency.

2. Who is eligible for medical transportation service?

Seniors 60+ in Bloomfield Township and the City of Bloomfield Hills may qualify for medical transportation. An application is required along with proof of residency.

3. Are there any limitations in using medical transportation?

Medical transportation is limited to within 10 miles of Bloomfield Township, and limited to those who have a medical condition or illness that makes driving unsafe or impossible and no other driver is available to assist.

4. What is the charge for using the BTSS transportation programs?

The BTSS bus charges $2 each way. There is no charge for the transportation service for medical appointments, but an application is required as there is limited funding through SMART through SMART.

5. When is service available for medical appointments?

Medical transportation service through BTSS is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No service on holidays.

6. How soon do I need to call for an appointment?

To reserve transportation rides to medical appointments, and you have an application on file, please call 2 – 6 days prior to medical appointment date. Emergency transportation is provided through 911.

7. How do I find out more information and get an application?

Nutrition Services

"BTSS is partially funded through the Area Agency on Aging 1-B through the Office of Services to the Aging, Nutrition Service Incentive Program (NSIP).  BTSS complies with the terms and regulations of the Title V of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended in Section 504 of the Social Rehabilitation Act of 1973.  Equal opportunity employer program. BTSS addresses the nutritional needs of area seniors with two essential programs, Home Delivered Meals and Nutritional Supplement.  For additional information on either program, contact Donna DeWitte, Nutrition Coordinator at 248.341.6450 or by email.

Nutritional Supplements

Nutritional supplements are available to area seniors based on medical necessity.  BTSS orders Ensure monthly directly from the manufacturer at a reduced rate. Prices vary by product.  Talk to your physician and see if a nutritional supplement is recommended.  Physician’s note (prescription) required and must be renewed every six months.

Home Delivered Meals

BTSS provides home delivered meals to homebound (unable to drive or leave the home independently)  seniors 60+ living in Bloomfield  Township,  Bloomfield Hills,  West Bloomfield and Orchard Lake.  Meals are delivered by volunteer drivers Monday through Friday between 10:00 AM and 12 noon. The suggested donation is $3.75 per hot meal (price reflects partial funding provided by Area Agency on Aging 1B).

Home Delivered Meals FAQ’s

1. What is Home Delivered Meals?

Home Delivered Meals is a service offered to homebound seniors (generally unable to drive or leave the home independently) within the service area of BTSS.

2. Who is eligible?

Bloomfield Township Senior Services provides home delivered meals to people living in Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, West Bloomfield Township, and the City of Orchard Lake. To be eligible for this service, the client must be: a person 60 years of age or older, or be the spouse of a person 60 years of age of older, or be an individual with disabilities who resides in a non-institutional household with a person eligible for and receiving home delivered meals. For additional eligibility criteria please contact BTSS at 248.341.6450 or send an email.

3. How do I apply?

You or a family member may apply by telephone 248.341.6450 or send an email to Bloomfield Township Senior Services (BTSS). When BTSS receives a request for home delivered meals the call and/or information is forwarded to the Nutrition Coordinator. The Nutrition Coordinator will call the potential recipient to obtain information regarding indications of need (reason for meal request, health status, assistance devices), eligibility requirements, and to explain the program.

4. What is the cost?

Approximately 15% of the cost of each meal is federally funded by the Area Agency on Aging 1-B. The suggested client donation is $3.75 per hot meal. Contributions are appreciated and essential to ensure the future of the program.

5. How soon can I start?

Delivery of meals can generally begin approximately 2 weeks after the initial telephone interview. If your home is on a route that is currently full, you may be placed on a waiting list. Please note that the Home Delivered Meal program is not an emergency food service.

6. How nutritious are the meals?

The meals are planned to provide 1/3 of the USDA recommended daily nutrition for older adults. Please click on the MENU link on the BTSS Transportation and Nutrition Services page to view a sample menu. The meals are prepared and packaged offsite and delivered to BTSS each morning.

8. Can you accommodate special diets?

Every meal is low sodium in that there is no added salt to food during the preparation process. In order to limit the sodium content of the meal, cured or processed meats are served no more than once a week.

9. Is the meal delivered hot or cold?

The meal is delivered hot and can be served at that time or can be re-heated later that day.

10. When are the meals delivered?

The meals will be delivered between 10:00 AM -12:00 noon, Monday – Friday.

11.  Do I have to receive meals Monday through Friday?

No. Meal service can be arranged for any combination of days (Monday – Friday).

12. Who delivers the meals?

The meals are delivered by trained volunteers from the community.

13.  Can the driver leave the meal if I am not home?

No. The driver will not leave a meal unattended. Food safety guidelines do not allow us to leave the meals without knowing when they will be refrigerated or consumed.

Additionally, part of our mission is to see each client for each delivery. If the client does not respond to our attempts to deliver their scheduled meal, BTSS will call the client’s emergency contacts.

14. What if I have to cancel a meal?

If you find that you will not be home to accept your meal, please contact us at 248.341.6450 two business days in advance in order for us to cancel your meal from our supplier. Should an emergency occasion suddenly arise in which you must be away from home, please call us at any time of the day or night so that we do not send a volunteer driver to your home. Feel free to leave a voice message as messages are checked regularly.
