Adult Day Service - Friendship Club

The Friendship Club offers significant support to our elder residents living with dementia as well as their caregivers.

ADS’s goals are to support the participant’s highest level of ability; encouraging well-being and dignity; providing a safe and stimulating homelike environment and finally, give respite for family caregivers.

A caregiver forum is held on the second Tuesday of each month from 5:00-6:30 PM. Everyone is welcome, whether their loved one attends the program or not. If you need respite care while you attend the support group meetings, please call ahead and make arrangements. Respite care is available for enrolled members.

  • Caregiver/Family Services:

    In addition to the much needed respite provided by the ADS program, caregivers and family members are supported by the following:

  • Caregiver counseling and support.
  • Caregiver resource and community referral information and assistance.
  • Monthly caregiver support group meetings.
  • Counseling and support for participants provided by a licensed Social Worker
  • A caregiver forum is held on the second Tuesday of each month from 5:00-6:30 PM, everyone is welcome whether their loved one attends the program or not. If you need respite care while you attend the support group meetings, please call ahead and make arrangements. Respite care is available for enrolled members. The July Caregiver Forum will meet on Tuesday, July 21st from 5-6:30 PM. There will not be a Caregiver Forum meeting in August. The meetings will resume on Tuesday, September 15th.

     

    FAQ's

    1. What is Adult Day Service?

    Adult Day Service is a specialized program for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. The Friendship Club is community-based, therapeutic program dedicated to assisting older adults maintain their highest level of ability. The safe, secure, stimulating and caring environment is designed to enhance the self-esteem, well being, and dignity of each member through the creation of person-centered programs. This partnership in caregiving enables family members to keep their loved at home, by providing much needed respite and support.

    The activities and programs offered are designed specifically for individuals living with dementia and build on each member’s ability and interest. A diverse selection of activities includes: arts and crafts, board and card games, baking, gardening, reminiscence therapy, pet visits, life skill activities, exercise programs, intergenerational programs, group discussions, and community outings. A music specialist visits three times a week.

    3. Are support services offered for family caregivers?

    Yes. Our family caregiver forum meets the second Tuesday of every month from 5:00-6:30 PM at the Friendship Club. This support group is open to anyone that is a caregiver. Other supports for family caregivers include counseling, referrals to other community-based services and training workshops.

    4. Are meals provided for members?

    Yes. A continental breakfast is served in the morning, a hot meal at lunch, and an afternoon snack.

    5. Can special diets be accommodated?

    The hot lunches are provided by Bloomfield Township Senior Services Home Delivered Meals program. Every meal is low sodium in that there is no added salt to food during the preparation process.  In order to limit the sodium content of the meal, cured or processed meats are served no more than once a week.

    6. Is transportation available? What is the cost?

    Transportation is available to and from the Friendship Club. The fee for transportation is $8 one-way or $16 round trip. This service is dependent on staff availability.

    7. Are other services available for members of the Friendship Club?

    Personal grooming assistance is available at a fee of $12.00 per service per time and must be pre-arranged. Showers include shampooing, blow-dry and styling if needed.

    8. Is there a nurse on staff?

    Yes, an R.N. is available Monday through Friday and visits the center bi-weekly to monitor the members’ health status. The R.N. also reviews the medical forms from the physician to ensure that the program can meet the medical and physical needs of the members.

    9. Will the "Friendship Club" staff administer medications?

    Medications are administered only when prescribed by a physician. Over-the-counter medications will be administered only after it is documented that the member has no known allergies, the family consents and standing orders from their physician. Strict guidelines for administration are maintained in cooperation with caregivers.

    10. Where is the Adult Day Service located?

    The BTSS Friendship Club is located at 2222 Franklin Road, in Bloomfield Township, north of Square Lake Road and east of Telegraph Road.

    11. Is residency of Bloomfield Township required?

    Members of the Friendship Club must be Bloomfield Township residents or their primary family caregiver must reside in Bloomfield Township.

    12. Is a doctor’s order required?

    Yes, there is a medical history form that must be completed by the members’ physician and that indicates a diagnosis of dementia or related memory impairment. Additionally, an up-to-date negative TB reading is required.

    13. What are the hours of operation?

    The Friendship Club hours of operation are: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Additional time may be scheduled based on caregiver needs and staffing levels.

    14. What are the fees? And what do they include?

    Enrollment fees are $13 per hour up to 5.5 hours a day. Members who attend greater than 5.5 hours and up to 7 hours per day are charged at a discounted rate of $70 per day. This fee includes a continental breakfast, a hot lunch, snacks and a full activities program.

    15. Are there any other requirements for enrollment in the Friendship Club?

    Members must be at least 50 years old and able to ambulate with the assistance of a cane, walker, or wheelchair. If using a wheelchair, the individual must be able to stand and transfer to use the bathroom with the assistance of one person. Individuals must also be able to participate in the program with existing staffing ratios (1 staff to 4 members) and benefit from a structured activities program based on social work and nursing evaluations. Members must also be capable of being transported to the program and are required to pay program fees. Application for financial assistance is available.
