Chief of Police

Chief of Police Kirt BowdenThe Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees named Deputy Chief Kirt Bowden as the next Chief of Police at its regular meeting on Monday, March 26, 2007. Deputy Chief Bowden follows Interim Police Chief Don Zimmerman, who came out of a ten-year retirement to take office in February 2006, when former Police Chief Jeff Werner retired.

"What an honor it is to be chosen to lead such a fine police department," said Dep. Chief Bowden. "The Bloomfield Township Police Department has always strived to provide professional service to the community and will continue to make our residents feel safe and secure."

Deputy Chief Bowden was hired into the Bloomfield Township Police Department in December, 1977. He rose through the ranks, becoming a detective in 1988, a sergeant in 1993, a lieutenant in 1999 and captain in March, 2002. He was named Deputy Chief in March, 2006. He has received a Department Unit Commendation, an Honorable Mention, a Meritorious Service recognition and a Letter of Recognition. In 1987 he was named Officer of the Year.

Deputy Chief Bowden has just completed a three-month course at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. This is a select training program for law enforcement executives that focuses on both educational and physical training.

Interim Police Chief Zimmerman will return to retirement after this 14-month period of transition in the Township’s Police Department. His mandate was to assess the Department’s top officers and make recommendations for the leadership positions.

"The Township has always preferred to promote people from within its own ranks," he said. "This Police Department has more than enough talent to assure a healthy progression and this has taken place here this evening."
