History
The
Bloomfield Township EMS Service was established in July 1977.
It was the third Advanced Life Support (ALS) system licensed
in Oakland County and the fourth licensed in the State of
Michigan. In 1998, Bloomfield Township Paramedics became the
first in Oakland County to provide 12-lead Electrocardiograms
(EKG's). The Oakland County Medical Control Board is the
governing and policy making body for EMS systems in Oakland
County.
Resources
The Department operates four
frontline ALS units. One Paramedic Engine and three medium
duty Rescue vehicles operate 24 hours a day with a minimum of
two paramedics on each unit. All uniformed members of the fire
department are licensed to one of the levels of pre-hospital
medicine. There are 47 Paramedics, 16 Emergency Medical
Technicians and seven Medical First Responders currently in
the department.
CPR Classes
The EMS Division offers American Heart Association
Heartsaver classes to Township residents every other month on
a continuing basis. The class includes instruction on adult
CPR and adult foreign body airway obstruction (choking).
Pediatric (child) CPR classes are offered on an as needed
basis. For information on class dates and class reservations,
call 248.433.7745 between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM
Monday through Friday. These classes are a free service of the
Department; there is no charge.

1. How many Paramedics does Bloomfield Township have?
Bloomfield Township has 47 Paramedics. There are currently 13
Paramedics assigned to each shift with a minimum of eight on
duty each day.
2. How many EMS units does the Fire Department have?
The Fire Department operates three Rescue vehicles and one
Paramedic Engine. Each of these vehicles responds with a
minimum of two Paramedics. Patient transportation is provided
by a private ambulance company.
3. Who comes when I call 9-1-1 for a medical problem?
The typical response is at least four fire department
personnel (minimum 2 paramedics) and a private ambulance with
two attendants.
4. What happens when all four Advanced Life Support (ALS)
units are busy at the same time?
A Medical First Responder Engine will respond along with an (ALS)
unit from another agency.
5. Where can I learn CPR?
Adult CPR classes are given every other month at Fire Station
1. Pediatric CPR classes are given on an as needed basis.
6. Where can I learn First Aid?
Basic First Aid classes are offered through the American Heart
Association, American Red Cross, Community Colleges and local
school district Adult Education Classes.
7. Where can I get my blood pressure checked?
Blood pressure checks are available at any Township fire
station, 365 day a year. The service is free of charge.
