Safety Path Program
The
program consists of constructing concrete safety paths
throughout the Township as outlined in the 1999 Safety Path
Master Plan. The original paths were constructed to provide
pedestrians, joggers and bikers with safe passage from local
neighborhoods to schools, shopping areas and other local
points of interest. These concerns, combined with our
residents’ interest in health and exercise, continue to drive
this program.
In response to our residents’ interest, the Engineering and
Environmental Services Department, working with our consulting
engineers, update the Safety Path Master Plan annually. Future
safety path routes are considered based upon input from
residents and homeowner associations, connectivity to existing
paths, accessibility to Township amenities such as schools,
places of worship, shopping districts and other points of
interest, the ability to construct within the existing public
right-of-way, and the preservation of surrounding natural
features. Final detailed engineering plans are prepared for
safety path routes after they have been determined to be
feasible for construction within the cost of the program.
Safety Paths are maintained for seasonal use as weather
permits. The Department of Public Works focuses
its resources on keeping the roads clear during winter months.
In the spring, summer and fall, the paths are cleared of
leaves and the areas around them are mowed and trimmed of
branches and overgrowth.
Benefits of this program: Provides a safe passage for
children to school; promotes health and exercise; and promotes
awareness of Township landscapes and natural features.
2008 Safety Path Construction Program
This project consists of constructing concrete safety paths

Township Board. Beginning this spring, safety path
construction will start on the south side of Lone Pine Road
from Timberlake Drive to Lahser Road. New safety paths will
also be constructed this year at the following locations:
- East side of Opdyke Road, Warwick Drive to South
Boulevard
- North side of Hickory Grove Road, from Telegraph Road to
Franklin Road
- East side of Franklin Road, Long Lake Road to Telegraph
Road
- Square Lake Road, Telegraph Road to Klingensmith Road
- Telegraph Road, Square Lake Road to Klingensmith Road
- North side of 14 Mile Road, Duval Drive to Brookwood
Lane
- Reconstruction of Long Lake Road safety path, Andover
Road to West Bloomfield Township border

Safety Path Millage Renewal
Residents approved the Township’s Safety Path Millage for
another five-year period Aug. 5.
This renewal will collect an estimated $1.9 million in
2009. Money collected will go to pay for the next phase of
construction of new paths that will link many existing paths
together. This will allow people to walk for extended
distances along the safety path system, rather than limiting
people to the area immediately abutting their own
neighborhood. The renewal will also fund ongoing maintenance
of the paths as well as acquisition of rights-of-way.
The plan for continuation of safety paths preserves, to the
greatest extent possible, the surrounding natural features. It
is based on anticipated usage according to input from
residents.
Moving forward, a renewal of the Safety Path Millage means
work on expanding the system will continue. Several projects
have already been recommended. They include safety paths at
Woodward Avenue north of Square Lake Road and Maple east of
Lahser Road.
The Safety Path Millage was first approved by voters in
1998 and subsequently renewed in 2004.
