Fire Department Open House for Special Needs Children

The Bloomfield Township Fire Department, in cooperation with the Down Syndrome Guild of Southeast Michigan (DSGSEMI), held an Open House for children with special needs on Saturday, October 2. Kids and parents enjoyed a fun-filled morning of fire truck rides, "Stop, Drop and Roll" practice, trying on firefighter gear, and meeting Sparky, the Fire Dog. They also experienced hose line spray and the safety smoke house. Light refreshments were served.

The event was best characterized by a father who wrote the Fire Department after the event to thank them.

"I want to share my gratitude with you for setting aside time specifically for the DSGSEMI families last weekend. As a member of the group and the proud father of a daughter with Down Syndrome, I appreciate the effort and fortitude it takes to work with special needs kids. My wife Katherine and daughters, Shannon, age 8, and Melanie, age 6, enjoyed the experience and personal attention your staff devoted to them. I've enclosed some pictures of the girls. Please share this note with your staff, so that it may lift their hearts as they lifted ours."
