Rizzo Services
May 11, 2007
Dear Township Resident:
Recently, the Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees voted
unanimously to change to a different solid waste hauling
company. This decision to change contractors was not made
lightly. We want you to know that the quality of service you
will receive and the importance of getting the best value for
your dollar were the primary considerations. We are confident
that the decision the Trustees made was the right one. This
letter will give you some background as well as information
about what you can expect from the Township’s new solid waste
service provider, Rizzo Services.
In 1991, Bloomfield Township decided to contract with a
single, solid waste hauler to provide refuse collection for
all residential units in the Township. The Township Board of
Trustees approved this action under Ordinance No. 437. After a
public bidding process, City Waste was awarded the first solid
waste contract with the Township. In 1999 we awarded the
current contract to Waste Management. It will expire on June
30, 2007. In anticipation of the end of this contract, we
publicly requested bid proposals, which were submitted in
February 2007. An evaluation committee conducted interviews,
checked references and did on-site inspections of the top
bidders’ facilities. On March 26, 2007, the Trustees awarded
the Township's solid waste contract to Rizzo Services. The
change will take effect July 1, 2007.
The current service options and benefits you receive now
are mandated by the Township's contract and will remain
unchanged. Specifically, your pickup dates will not change,
you still have the option to choose curbside, doorside or
inside services, and yard waste, recycling and bulk pickup
services remain the same.
Additionally, the new contract includes the following
benefits:
Rizzo’s bid was $2.1 million less, over the contract
period, than what Waste Management proposed.
Their rates have no increases over the eight-year life
of the contract for single-family residential homes.
Residential areas that use dumpster services will see
their initial rates decrease substantially.
For those residents who want to pay in advance for one
year of service, one month will be free.
In a continual effort to promote environmental
awareness, Rizzo will accept a greater assortment of
recycling material.
This family owned business has been in operation since
1965 and will be adding new equipment and relocating to a
larger facility in Sterling Heights this year.
Rizzo Services is committed to making this transition as
smooth as possible. Residents will receive their first bill
in June, which covers services for the months of July, August
and September. You can expect to see initial rate changes in
this first billing period.
Bloomfield Township’s website, www.bloomfieldtwp.org, will
answer most of your initial questions by providing a "Frequently Asked Questions" section, as
well as specific information pertaining to the new contract.
You may also contact our Department of Public Works Solid
Waste phone line at 248.433.7706 with any additional concerns
or comments on this matter.
Yours truly,
Dave Payne,
Township Supervisor
