Bloomfield Township Police Bike Patrol
While
the Bloomfield Township Police Department experimented with
the bike patrol concept in the mid-70s under the auspices of
the then Community Youth Relations Division, May 2001 marked
the official sanctioned beginning of the Bike Patrol Unit for
Bloomfield Township Police Department.
"Recognizing the need to place officers closer to the
community to better serve it while keeping them mobile enough
to be effective patrol officers, the Department authorized the
Effective Cycling© training for six patrol officers,"
commented Chief Jeff Werner. These officers were chosen in a
selection process which identified those who are highly
motivated, self-supervising and highly productive.
Summertime was a busy time of the year for members of the
unit. The bike patrol model made officers more approachable
and accessible to residents and citizens. Bike officers were
seen in the Township's shopping centers, traversing school
grounds, making the rounds of known teen gatherings, checking
potential trouble spots, and "cruisin'" on Woodward in August.
