Each year, the Bloomfield Township Police Department seeks to reward those officers, civilian employees, and Township residents who have performed some act that benefited the department and generally made the Township a nicer, safer place to live.  There are several awards that can be issued, depending upon the service or act performed.  The most commonly issued are described below:

The Meritorious Service Medal

The Meritorious Service MedalAwarded for some difficult task in which crime is prevented, life and property protected, or criminals apprehended.  It can also be awarded for assistance in an auxiliary capacity due to technical knowledge, expertise and/or unusual effort put forth.

Chief's Merit Award

Chief's Merit AwardPresented for efficient and valuable service to the department, either in carrying out a specific task, or in the performance of general duties over an extended period of time.

Life Saving Award

Life Saving AwardIssued to a law enforcement officer who personally saves a life.  The lifesaving effort will normally involve, but is not limited to, any of the learned life-supporting processes:  Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, CPR, or the Heimlich maneuver for choking victims.

Department Unit Commendation

Department Unit CommendationThis is awarded in recognition of outstanding police services performed by an departmental unit, such as the Field Training Officers unit, Traffic Investigations Unit, etc.

Medal of Bravery

Medal of BraveryAwarded when a law enforcement officer performs an act in the line of duty knowingly endangering or exposing himself/herself to serious injury, and where because of the nature of the action, a life may be saved, a serious crime prevented, or a person arrested who has committed a serious crime.

Oak Leaf

Oak LeafThis is added to any of the above awards to signify a subsequent award.

 For example, this is what you would see on the uniform of an officer who has received two Meritorious Service Medals.

Meritorious Service
Officer Mitchell Holloway

The Meritorious Service MedalIn February of 2007, Ofc. Holloway was assisting the FBI with a raid in Bloomfield Township.  While assigned to the perimeter detail he observed a subject with a shotgun and ammunition who was approaching the raid team.  Holloway immediately notified the raid team who then took necessary precautions and disarmed the subject.  Ofc. Holloway's actions resulted in the apprehension of the suspect with no injuries to the suspect or raid team. (07-2105)

MERITORIOUS SERVICE
OFFICER JOSEPH MONTI

The Meritorious Service MedalIn July of 2007, Officer Monti took a home invasion report.  Later, he observed a suspect walking on Telegraph Road and investigated the subject. Monti’s  investigation led to the suspect being arrested for parole violations. While     searching the subject, he discovered the property stolen from the home invasion he had investigated earlier. Ofc. Monti’s dedication and devotion led to the arrest and recovery of the stolen property.  (07-3385)

MERITORIOUS SERVICE
OFFICER AARON SPARKS

The Meritorious Service MedalIn August of 2007, Ofc. Sparks was dispatched to several reports of  home invasion and larceny in the same neighborhood in Bloomfield Township.  After completing the reports, he patrolled the neighborhood on his police bicycle and located a group of juveniles in the area.  Sparks’ dedication and perseverance led to the arrest of six (6) juveniles and the recovery of the stolen property.  (07-3660)

OFFICER ROGER WECHTER

The Meritorious Service MedalIn October of 2007, Ofc. Wechter was assisting another officer with a traffic stop on Telegraph Road.  During the investigation, a felony warrant for the driver of the vehicle was discovered.  The driver was arrested and a foot pursuit ensued with the passenger. When Wechter caught the suspect  he forced him to the ground. During this altercation Wechter was injured, but he continued to fight and apprehended the suspect. It was later learned the suspect had just been released from prison and was desperate to not return. Ofc. Wechter’s dedication and perseverance led to a dangerous offender being apprehended and sent back to prison.  (07-5208)

DETECTIVE CORY BAUMAN – SOUTHFIELD P.D.
DETECTIVE BRIAN SOBECKI – ROYAL OAK P.D.
DETECTIVE MICHAEL PANKEY – OAKLAND COUNTY S.D.
DETECTIVE BRIAN BASTIANELLI – FARMINGTON HILLS P.D.
DETCTIVE JEFF FLETEMIER – WEST BLOOMFIELD P.D.

For their dedication, perseverance and tireless investigation of a homicide that  occurred in December of 2006. Their investigation led to the recovery of the murder weapon and other evidence. The diligence and professionalism of these officers resulted in the apprehension of the suspect who was subsequently charged with first degree murder. (06-905429)

CHIEF’S MERIT AWARD
ANIMAL WELFARE OFFICER RICK METCALF

Chief's Merit AwardAwarded for Animal Welfare Officer Metcalf’s commitment and dedication to the  residents of Bloomfield Township.  He regularly assists in any manner possible and often goes above and beyond the call of duty.  He is well known for volunteering to assist and carry out his duties with efficiency and enthusiasm.  Metcalf’s professionalism and outstanding work ethic are an example to all.

OFFICER DAVE COMERFORD

In May of 2007, Officer Comerford was dispatched to a residence on an attempted home invasion complaint.  While enroute to the residence, he was given the descriptions of the suspect and his vehicle.  Prior to his arrival Comerford observed a vehicle that matched the suspect’s vehicle and conducted an investigatory traffic stop on the vehicle. Comerford’s investigation led to a search of the vehicle and the location of stolen property from the complaint to which he had been dispatched. Comerford’s dedication and determination led to the apprehension of the suspect and the recovery of the stolen property.  (07-2306)

LETTER OF RECOGNITION
DISPATCHER KRISTY SUNG

Awarded for Dispatcher Sung’s calm, efficient and professional handling of a  domestic violence / fatal traffic accident in May of 2007.  While working in dispatch, she was able to assist the officers on the scene, handle all incoming phone calls,  contact command staff, and dispatch the fire department. Further,  Sung managed all of this while working alone in dispatch. Her professionalism and diligence were nothing short of impressive.  (07-2132) 

DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN AWARD
MR. QUINTIN ROGERS

In September of 2007, Mr. Rogers was driving on Woodward when he noticed a suspicious subject place a bag behind a bush at the Rite Aid store.  Due to his training as a parole and loss prevention officer, he continued to watch the suspect.  Mr. Rogers observed the subject re-enter the store and exit again with items concealed beneath his jacket.  At that time he stopped the subject, identified himself, and took the suspect back into the store.  Numerous stolen items were found on the suspect.  As this department was being notified, the suspect attempted to flee the scene. Rogers gained control of the suspect and restrained him until the police arrived.  Rogers’ dedication and selflessness resulted in the subject being arrested and the stolen property being recovered.  (07-4596)

DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN AWARD
MS. TOMICA KERSEY

In May of 2007, Tomica Kersey observed an unknown suspect in her residence.  She confronted the subject and he fled the home.  Tomica immediately reported the crime, providing a comprehensive, detailed description of a suspect that had been knocking on her door earlier that day.  Tomica’s report included a detailed description of the vehicle the suspect had been driving.  Her quick thinking and accurate description led to the location and arrest of the suspect.  (07-2306)
