Safety Path Program

The program consists of constructing concrete safety paths throughout the Township as outlined in the 1999 Safety Path Master Plan. The original paths were constructed to provide pedestrians, joggers and bikers with safe passage from local neighborhoods to schools, shopping areas and other local points of interest. These concerns, combined with our residents’ interest in health and exercise, continue to drive this program.

In response to our residents’ interest, the Engineering and Environmental Services Department, working with our consulting engineers, update the Safety Path Master Plan annually. Future safety path routes are considered based upon the anticipated usage by residents, the ability to construct within the existing public right-of-way, and to preserve the surrounding natural features. Final detailed engineering plans are prepared for safety path routes after they have been determined to be feasible for construction within the cost of the program.

Benefits of this program: Provides a safe passage for children to school; promotes health and exercise; and promotes awareness of Township landscapes and natural features.

2011 Safety Path Program

This year’s program includes construction of new paths in the following locations:

• 14 Mile Road – north side from Telegraph Road to Lahser Road (1.04 miles)
• 14 Mile Road – north side from Orchard Lane to Crosswick Road (.54 miles)
• Telegraph Road – west side from Orchard Way to Maple Road (.2 miles)
• Covington Road – west side from Amberly Road to Covington Middle School (.42 miles)
• Square Lake Road – south side from the International Academy to Squirrel Road (.21 miles)
• Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will complete construction of Township requested paths on Telegraph Road, utilizing Federal ARRA funding, totaling 2.4 miles.

In 2010, Bloomfield Township constructed the following paths:

• Square Lake Road – north side from Klingensmith Road to the west Township line. (1.14 miles)
• Square Lake Road – south side from Fieldway Drive to Telegraph Road (.3 miles)
• Telegraph Road – west side from Square Lake Road to Franklin Road (.21 miles)
• Franklin Road – east side from Square Lake Road to Kendry Drive (.1 miles)
• Woodward Avenue – west side from North Berkshire Road to Square Lake Road (.5 miles)
