2013 Projects

Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Project

The Township will be rehabilitating the sanitary sewers and sanitary manholes around Wing Lake and just south of Maple Road. This includes the sewers and manholes that surround Wing Lake in Formans Wing Lake, Broughtons Park, Lakeshores Park, Westwood Manor No. 1, Wing Lake Court, Wingcroft, Wing Lake Shores, Wing Lake Shores Estates, Sly Farms No. 2, and Sly Farms No. 4 Subdivisions.

The sewer rehabilitation will be performed by no-dig technologies, in which equipment is inserted into the manholes and the sewer pipe rehabilitated from within. These practices include grouting joints or lining the sewer with a resin filled felt liner. If the initial investigation indicates that an excavation repair or pipe replacement is needed, residents will be notified in advance of this work. In order to prevent odors from the sewer or rehabilitation techniques from entering your home during the project, it is best to pour water into floor drains and seldom used sinks, showers, and tubs. This water will prevent odors from traveling up through the pipe and dispersing in your home. Additional information on how to reduce sewer odors in your home can be found below and on the adjacent document link below.

The contractor selected to perform the work is Lanzo Trenchless Technologies and the work is expected to be completed in the fall 2013. The Engineering & Environmental Services Department (EESD) is managing the project. Questions can be directed to the EESD at 248.594.2800 or send an e-mail. After hours emergency contact is 248.433.7730.

How Do Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Projects Affect Residents?

Sewer rehabilitation projects are necessary to provide for and maintain the removal of sanitary wastes from residents’ homes and businesses. Like any infrastructure system, sanitary sewers have a limited life span. Fortunately, Bloomfield Township has implemented a regular maintenance program to identify any sewer issues as soon as possible.

During the sewer rehabilitation projects, residents may experience the following disruptions in regular services:

1. The contractor will notify residents via door hangers to minimize water use during the day of the sewer work. This includes not using dishwashers or washing machines and limiting shower use to before or after the work.

2. Most of the rehabilitation is conducted from within the sewer by accessing the sewer manholes. In some cases, the manholes are located within easements along rear and side yard property lines. Additionally, some manholes may be buried, and as part of the project will be raised to the surface. Any disruption to property will be restored at the completion of the project.

3. The contractor will use water from fire hydrants within the project areas. Hydrant use may cause water in area close to the hydrant to appear rust colored. This condition does not pose a health problem. If the water in your home appears rust colored, run the cold water for 15-20 minutes or until the water is clear. If the water does not clear within 20 minutes, contact the Bloomfield Township Public Works Department at 248.594.2800. If the rusty water affects laundry, commercial products for removing rust can be purchased at local stores. Typically, the products instruct that the clothing be re-washed using the product, and the rust will be removed.

4. Bypass pumping of sewage may be required during the rehabilitation work. This is accomplished by using above ground gas powered pumps. Once the rehabilitation work is completed, the bypass pumping will be removed.

Additional questions can be directed to the Engineering & Environmental Services Department at 248.594.2800 or send an e-mail.

Adams & Lenox Water Main Extension

Bloomfield Township is extending water main from the corner of Square Lake Road and Adams Road, south along Adams Road to Lenox Road, and then west along Lenox Road to the existing water main at Lenox Road and Vhay Lane. The water main will be installed via. trenchless technologies to minimize surface disruption. Residents can anticipate excavations at the following three areas that may affect traffic for short periods of time: Lenox Road at the intersection with Adams Road, and Lenox Road at the intersection with Vhay Lane.

Questions regarding the project can be directed to the Engineering and Environmental Services Department (EESD) at 248.594.2800. The contractor selected for the work is Pamar Enterprises, Inc. The project contacts can be found by clicking here.

SOCWA Connection and Quarton Road Water Main Extension

In 2009 Bloomfield Township became a customer of the Southeast Oakland County Water Authority (SOCWA), and began to purchase drinking water from SOCWA rather than Detroit Water and Sewer Department (DWSD). One of the requirements of becoming a customer of SOCWA is to make a connection to the existing SOCWA water supply system. This work will be conducted this summer and fall in the area of Quarton Road and Chesterfield Road. In addition, the Township will extend a 12” water main from the SCOWA connection along the south side of Quarton Road to Covington Road. This new water main and connection will allow the Township Department of Public Works (DPW) to operate the water system more affectively. The project is expected to be bid mid-summer and will extend through the fall of 2013. Questions regarding the project can be directed to the Engineering and Environmental Services Department (EESD) at 248.594.2800. The contact information will be updated prior to the start of the project once the contractor is selected.

Wing Lake Shores Subdivision Water Main Replacement

As part of the Township’s continuing water system improvement program, the water mains in Wing Lake Shores Subdivision are to be upgraded. This includes upsizing the existing 4” and 6” diameter water mains with 8” diameter water main. The Township is in the planning stages of the project. The Township’s engineering consultant, HRC is on site collecting topographic information, and will develop the final water main replacement program. The project is scheduled to be bid July 2013, and constructed in late summer through early fall 2013. Questions regarding the project can be directed to the Engineering and Environmental Services Department (EESD) at 248.594.2800. The contact information will be updated prior to the start of the project once the contractor is selected.

Romford Boulevard Sewer Extension

Bloomfield Township is extending sanitary sewer on Romford Boulevard between Worlington Road and Wing Lake Road. The project is scheduled to begin April 15th and lasting about two weeks. Restoration of the surrounding right of way will be completed once temperatures increase.

Questions regarding the project can be directed to the Engineering and Environmental Services Department (EESD) at 248.594.2800. The contractor selected for the work is Springline Excavating, LLC. The project contacts can be found by clicking here.
