The special meeting was called to hear a proposal from the
City of Bloomfield Hills on moving a historic farmhouse to the
Bowers Farm.
Mayor Patricia Hardy gave a summary on the evolution of the
historic Barton House project. She explained the house is
currently located at 586 E. Long Lake Road on property
belonging to a developer with plans to construct a
single-family residential development. Mayor Hardy concluded
that the Bowers Farm seemed a natural fit to establish the
historic farmhouse to provide opportunity for future
generations to explore the rich history of the Bloomfield
community.
Pam Carmichael with the Bloomfield Historical Society
provided a preliminary study of the Barton Farmhouse and the
surrounding area. It was estimated the farmhouse was
originally built in the early 1840’s.
Ron Campbell with Oakland County Economic Development and
Planning extended his services to work with the involved
parties to preserve the facility and define possible future
uses.
Marcia Gibbens, Executive Director of Instruction described
the myriad of lessons available for instruction in conjunction
with the farmhouse on the Bowers Farm property.
Holly Glomski, Manager of Bowers Farm explained the
addition of the farmhouse to the property would complement the
agriculture programs the Bowers Farm currently offers.
Commissioner Kellett stated the cost estimate to move the
original portion of the house was approximately$160,000. He
explained the cost to move the entire farmhouse would be about
three times that amount or $450,000. Commissioner Kellett
noted in August 2007, the developer provided for 6 months to
move the house from the property; it is his hope that a
timeline can be negotiated.
Mayor Hardy reported city resident Sue Nine has volunteered
to head the fundraising committee for this project. She
suggested a preliminary event such as an Open House at the
farmhouse to garner community interest.
The discussion was opened to the members for questions or
comments.
During discussion with the panel, the following points were
raised:
- Responsibility of long-term maintenance costs.
- Status of farmhouse if school district faces decision on
future of Bowers Farm.
- Time constraints on fundraising and relocation of
farmhouse.
- Importance of developing a specific use for farmhouse on
school property.
- Accurate costs of moving and re-establishing the
farmhouse.
- Developing a community foundation to begin long-range
planning for a Greater Bloomfield Community.
- Defining the scope of the project.
- Ensuring project is not funded by taxpayer dollars.
- Including Bloomfield Historical Society as an integral
part of the project.
At 8:05 p.m. the floor was opened to hear public comment.
The following parties offered comment in support of
preserving the Barton farmhouse:
Eric Winkleman
Julie Jackson
Tom Wilson
Each board was tasked with providing two members to serve
on a committee to continue review of this endeavor.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned
at 8:55 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Amy L. Burton, City Clerk
